Los Angeles, CA - On Wednesday, June 30th, CAUSE hosted the eight session of the 2021 CAUSE Leadership Institute (CLI) virtually on Zoom, with a focus on developing Reflective Listening skills.
Led by Steve Lin, the CAUSE Director of Programs, CLI Fellows were introduced to the concept of Reflective Listening as a communication tool. Then in smaller groups, fellows took turns practicing reflective listening while also sharing more about their own personal stories.
A few of the fellows shared that, while the concept of Reflective Listening was easy to understand, actually practicing reflective listening during the session was challenging and required being conscious of and changing their usual communication habits. More importantly, fellows expressed appreciation for the opportunity to share more about themselves and to get to know each other more deeply.
In the end, this session added another tool to the Fellows’ toolbox to support community building both among the cohort as well as in each of their community engagements.

The CAUSE Leadership Institute (CLI) is a community leadership and advocacy training certificate program for high-potential professionals with seasoned leadership experience and a passion for serving the needs of the APA community in California. Participants complete the program armed with the skills and connections vital to advocate for the APA community. Graduates of this program have gone on to change the civic landscape in the region through elected office and leadership roles in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The 2021 program will be held virtually using Zoom.
Our program is highly selective and each member of our cohort is selected based on their leadership abilities, public service, and community involvement. Program fellows are identified by leading elected officials, select nonprofit partner organizations, CAUSE Board Members, and CAUSE Alumni.
