Week 7: It’s Me. Hi! I’m The Sidekick, It’s Me.

This week at Attorney General Rob Bonta's office was thrilling as I worked on providing memos on the Public Rights Project's Seeking Justice Gala 2023. This initiative, aimed at bridging the gap between legal promises and marginalized communities' realities, showcased the transformative power of local and state officials in upholding civil and human rights.

At the heart of the Public Rights Project's mission is a commitment to closing the divide between the legal system's potential and its impact on marginalized individuals and communities. Collaborating extensively with local, state, and tribal governments across the United States, the organization has been a driving force in enforcing laws safeguarding civil and human rights. Through litigation, training, convening, and compelling storytelling, they empower government officials to stand as allies in the fight for civil rights. This encompasses various crucial issues, from preserving abortion rights and ensuring fair elections to enforcing workers' rights and more.

Since its inception in 2017, the Public Rights Project has cultivated remarkable achievements. Training 108 prosecutors and government lawyers across 24 states, their influence extends across a vast geographic expanse. Victories in critical court cases regarding police accountability, abortion, immigrant rights, workers' rights, and voting rights underscore their commitment to systemic change. A testament to their dedication, the organization has also played a pivotal role in securing over $40 million in relief for marginalized communities.

The culmination of the Public Rights Project's endeavors, the Seeking Justice Gala 2023, holds special significance as their inaugural in-person gala. This event serves as a platform to celebrate Justice Seekers – local and state officials who champion civil rights causes. Attendees are invited to delve into the critical role played by government officials in safeguarding and advancing crucial rights, particularly in the realms of abortion and voting rights. What is super exciting is that Attorney General Rob Bonta is being awarded as a Justice Seeker!

Reflecting on this week at the Attorney General's office, I am struck by the realization that meaningful change is a collaborative endeavor. The Public Rights Project's commitment to bridging the gap between the law's promise and its practical impact is inspiring, and the Seeking Justice Gala 2023 serves as a testament to its unwavering dedication. I am reminded of our collective responsibility in advancing civil and human rights. Moreover, it has been a distinct honor for me to contribute to this transformative endeavor, particularly as it aligns with the Attorney General's ongoing advocacy for human rights within California. Over time, he has emerged as a beacon of inspiration for me, notably through his relentless efforts in combatting hate crimes targeting the AAPI community. As I continue to look up to him, I am genuinely eager to witness the unfolding chapters of his endeavors in championing historically marginalized communities across California.
