In May 2024, I graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, feeling unsure about how to navigate post-grad life. My first day at CLA was nerve-wracking; I was intimidated by those around me, not realizing they would soon become some of my closest friends. Alongside this, imposter syndrome began to creep in, and I thought to myself, "These next nine weeks are going to feel like an eternity." I was completely wrong, this summer flew by and I enjoyed every minute of it.
My experience at CLA has been incredibly insightful. I've not only learned to navigate challenging conversations but also gained valuable insights into my own communication styles. The CAUSE staff created a supportive and collaborative environment that allowed us all to grow, while also equipping us with the tools needed to navigate the world of policy and advocacy as members of the AAPI community. One session that particularly resonated with me was the discussion about having a seat at the table, especially when the decisions impact our communities. I had always understood the importance of having a seat at the table, but it was at CLA that I first heard, “Okay, you have a seat at the table, but what are you going to do with it?” I learned that having a seat is only the beginning; it's crucial to use that position to actively contribute to the improvement of my community. I’ve gained so many tools from my time at CAUSE, and I truly believe that I’ve become a better member of my community because of it.
A big part of my growth this past summer also stems from the efforts of my host office; Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office of External Affairs. I had the wonderful opportunity to work under Deputy Regional Director for California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office of External Affairs, Vishesh Anand. Serving as my mentor, Vishesh encouraged me to take initiative, practice networking, and understand the importance of being thorough in my work. During our weekly check-ins, Vishesh set aside time in our agenda for my professional development and to address any additional questions I had about my tasks. This provided a supportive environment where I felt at ease making mistakes and learning from them. Observing Vishesh in stakeholder meetings & community engagements, offered me a clear view of what it means to be a dedicated public servant, leaving me amazed and inspired by his approach. Seeing how others valued Vishesh’s support and guidance motivated me to aspire to follow in his footsteps.
Throughout these last nine weeks, I often shared with my friends & family how much I was enjoying learning about AAPI communities, policies, and myself. One day, a friend remarked, “You seem so happy and truly in your element.” I’m thankful to CAUSE for providing this incredible experience, which showed me how fulfilling it is to be surrounded by peers who share my passions and interests.
Albert Einstein once said, “The only source of knowledge is experience,” I’ve come to understand just how true that is. With the experiences I've gained, I no longer feel uneasy about navigating life after graduation. Instead, I am excited and eager to apply everything I've learned.
