Los Angeles, CA - January 23, 2024  -- Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) will provide vote information for the Primary Election on March 5, 2024 at the Monterey Park Lunar New Year Festival from January 27th through 28th, 2024 with the support of the World Journal. Led by participants of the 2024 CAUSE on Campus college student program, CAUSE will engage with festival attendees to increase voter turnout and overall civic engagement in Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities. These activities are supported by the Stop the Hate (STH) Program, administered by the California Department of Social Services and in consultation with the Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs. “The most effective way to fight hate and prejudice is to participate in the civic and political process and vote,” says Charlie Woo, CAUSE Board Chair.

At the festival, CAUSE will celebrate the New Year with opportunities to win prizes while learning about the upcoming election. This includes the following information:

  • Every California registered voter will receive a ballot by mail.

  • Ballots and voter information are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Tagalog, Thai or Vietnamese.

  • Voting in-person now begins 11 days prior to election day.

  • Residents of California can vote at any vote center.

For more voter resources, visit CAUSE’s resources website.

In collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles and Loyola Marymount University, CAUSE will also conduct a survey at the festival to poll attitudes around voting and voter outreach. CAUSE plans to use the data collected to inform voter outreach efforts for the November General Election. Surveys will be provided in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese to reflect the diversity of the San Gabriel Valley residents that are expected to attend the festival.

Asian American communities make up 64.5% of the population In Monterey Park. Other communities include 27.1% Hispanic, 5.4% White, and 0.7% Black. Nancy Yap, Executive Director of CAUSE states, “A large turnout by our community will send a message to elected officials that we are here, we are paying attention, and we will hold your office accountable to serving the diversity of our community ”
