California State Boards & Commissions Appointments

State boards and commissions are appointed bodies that oversee and influence public policy. Commissioners are appointed by the Governor or legislature and serve as public stewards, helping guide decisions that affect all Californians. These boards shape public policy across:

  • Education

  • Public health

  • Environmental justice

  • Economic development

Who Can Apply?

  • Most California residents are eligible—no prior government experience needed

  • People from all backgrounds: community leaders, advocates, and those with lived or professional experience

  • Most boards require applicants to be at least 18, but some positions accept youth as young as 14
